Michael Newman writes in “Indie: an American Film Culture” that independent film relies on film festivals to establish them as works of art. “The festival,” he writes, “fixes a film’s worthiness as artwork rather than commodity,” (Newman 82). But this definition is certainly challenged by the Sundance of today. While it’s exciting to see Ethan Hawke, Olivia Wilde, and Seth Rogen, in this year’s festival films, it does propose the question if festivals are becoming, in a way, more mainstream. I mean, Charli XCX was in not one but THREE of this year’s Sundance films.
