Joining a Film Union · SAG-AFTRA

Voice artist: how to join SAG-AFTRA

Voice artists perform off-camera: animated characters, video-game roles, ADR and looping, narration, and broadcast. It's SAG-AFTRA under the same performer contracts as on-camera work, and demo reels plus non-union sessions are how most people build toward eligibility.

Good to know

Voice work is SAG-AFTRA under the same performer contracts as on-camera acting, even though you never appear on screen. Most of the paid world (especially indie games and regional spots) is non-union, so the practical path is a strong demo and non-union credits until a covered animation, game, or national-commercial booking makes you eligible.

How to join, step by step

1

Know your union

  • Voice work (animation, games, ADR, narration, promo) is SAG-AFTRA under the same performer contracts.
  • You never appear on camera, but the card is the same.
2

Build a demo and non-union credits

  • A professionally produced demo in your lane (commercial, animation, games) is the calling card.
  • Most paid voice work, especially indie games and regional spots, is non-union: that is where you build.
3

Book a covered session

  • Covered animation, video-game, or national-commercial work is what makes you eligible.
  • Agents and casting directories are how those covered bookings come in.
4

Join when eligible

  • A covered voice booking makes you eligible to join SAG-AFTRA.
  • Keep session contracts as proof.

What you’ll need

  • Proof of a principal day OR three covered background days (vouchers, contracts, pay stubs)
  • Government ID and work eligibility documents
  • Initiation funds: currently $3,121 national (payment plans exist)
  • First semiannual dues, due at joining
