Kartemquin Films is a Chicago-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit documentary production company founded in 1966 by University of Chicago graduates Gordon Quinn, Jerry Temaner, and Stan Karter. Operating under a philosophy it calls 'Cinematic Social Inquiry,' the organization creates documentaries that foster a more engaged and just society and supports independent and emerging filmmakers. Its films have earned four Academy Award nominations and won multiple Emmy and Peabody Awards. In 2019 Kartemquin received an Institutional Peabody Award for its commitment to documentary filmmaking rooted in social justice. Notable productions include Hoop Dreams, The Interrupters, Life Itself, and Minding the Gap.
